Overview

Deduru Oya Reservoir is a large, scenic reservoir on the Deduru Oya river in the Kurunegala District, created by a dam that harnesses the river’s flow for irrigation and power. The reservoir is one of the more impressive water bodies in the North Western Province and its margins — where the water meets dry zone scrub and forest — provide excellent wildlife habitat. Waterbirds are abundant, including painted storks, pelicans, herons, and egrets, and elephants occasionally visit the reservoir margins from the adjacent forests. The open water, surrounding vegetation, and occasional granite outcrops emerging from the water surface create a landscape of considerable scenic quality. The reservoir is accessible from the surrounding rural roads and makes a rewarding half-day excursion from Kurunegala.
