Overview
Tangalle Beach is a naturally beautiful arc of golden sand and turquoise water that marks the eastern end of the main southern tourist coast, and it has long been a favourite destination among travellers seeking a more relaxed and natural alternative to the busier beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa. The beach area encompasses several distinct sections with different characters — from the main bay beach near the town, to the wilder and more exposed stretches at Goyambokka and Medaketiya — and the combined character of Tangalle as a beach destination is one of natural beauty and genuinely relaxed pace. The bay offers excellent swimming in season, spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean, and a selection of guesthouses and restaurants that have found the right level of comfort without sacrificing the natural character that makes the place special. Tangalle is the last significant beach town before the roads turn northeast toward the dry zone.
