Negombo is a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka, near the international airport. It has a strong fishing industry and is famous for its fish market, which operates in the early morning hours. The Dutch canal system, built during Dutch colonial rule, is a picturesque feature of the town. St. Mary’s Church, a large Roman Catholic cathedral, reflects the city’s significant Catholic population — a legacy of Portuguese colonisation. Negombo is often the first or last stop for visitors to Sri Lanka.
