Overview

Adam’s Bridge — known in Hindu tradition as Rama Setu (Rama’s Bridge) — is a chain of limestone shoals and sandbanks extending approximately 48 kilometres from Mannar Island toward Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, crossing the Palk Strait in a formation that is clearly visible by satellite and which is believed in Hindu mythology to be the remnants of a causeway built by the monkey army of Hanuman to allow Rama to cross to Lanka and rescue Seetha. The geological origin of the chain is debated, but its mythological significance as the most visible physical manifestation of the Ramayana in Sri Lanka makes it one of the most spiritually charged geographical features in the island. The Talaimannar area at the western tip of Mannar Island provides the best accessible viewpoints of the shallow straits and the beginning of the Adam’s Bridge chain.
