Overview
Iranamadu Tank is the largest reservoir in the Northern Province — a massive ancient tank built by the hydraulic civilisation of the Rajarata kingdom and subsequently damaged and neglected during the civil conflict era before being restored following 2009. The tank covers several thousand hectares at full supply and its restoration has been one of the most significant agricultural infrastructure achievements of the post-conflict reconstruction period, returning irrigation water to tens of thousands of paddy farming families in the Kilinochchi District. The tank’s shores provide excellent waterbird habitat, and the vast open water with the surrounding dry zone landscape creates a nature photography environment of considerable quality. The Iranamadu Tank is also significant as a symbol of the post-conflict reconstruction — a visible measure of the north’s recovery.
