Overview
Akkarayankulam is an ancient tank in the Vavuniya District that was impacted by the conflict and has since been restored to functionality. The lake provides productive waterbird habitat and a pleasant natural lake experience in the northern dry zone. The tank margins attract herons, cormorants, painted storks, and migratory species in the October–March window, and the open water with the surrounding dry zone scrub and palmyra palms creates a distinctively northern landscape aesthetic. The restoration of the lake is part of the broader agricultural recovery programme in the Vavuniya region.
