Hanthana Mountain Range

Overview

The Hanthana Mountain Range rises dramatically to the south of Kandy city, forming a green wall of ridges and peaks that define the city’s southern skyline and separate it from the tea-growing highlands beyond. The range extends for approximately 12 kilometres and its highest summit reaches 1,438 metres, offering extensive hiking opportunities ranging from gentle afternoon walks to full-day ridge traversals. The trails pass through tropical montane forest, cardamom plantations, tea estates, and open grassland, revealing a biological richness that includes endemic birds, orchids, and a variety of montane plants. The views from the upper ridges looking north across Kandy city and south across the layered mountains of the Central Highlands are magnificent at any time of day but particularly at dawn when mist fills the valleys below. The Hanthana range is also an important watershed and ecological corridor connecting lowland and highland forest habitats.
