Overview
Mannar Fort is a Dutch colonial fortification on the Mannar Island coastline, built over an earlier Portuguese fort of 1560 and substantially redesigned by the VOC from 1658 when they took possession of the island from the Portuguese. The fort commands a commanding position at the waterfront and its large, well-preserved star-shaped bastions and perimeter walls — though in a state of partial ruin and ongoing restoration — provide an atmospheric encounter with the colonial contest for this strategically vital island. The Mannar Fort has a more neglected and romantic character than the restored Jaffna Fort, with vegetation growing from the walls and the structures in various stages of decay alongside surviving stonework. The fort’s position at the waterfront allows views over the Gulf of Mannar.
