Overview
The forest reserves in and around the Vavuniya District represent pockets of dry zone forest that were partly protected by the inaccessibility imposed by the conflict, and which are now recovering in the post-conflict period. These reserves support elephant populations, dry zone birds, and the full range of northern dry zone fauna in conditions that are more ecologically intact than comparable southern forests that have faced greater development pressure. The reserves are not developed for tourism but provide genuinely wild forest experiences for those with the knowledge and willingness to access them.
