Nilaveli Beach

Overview

Nilaveli Beach is consistently ranked among the finest beaches in Sri Lanka — a long, wide arc of white sand stretching for approximately 12 kilometres north of Trincomalee along the northeastern coast, with clear, calm water, a natural beach profile that invites long walking, and the distinctive quality of light that the Eastern Province’s clear skies and calm Indian Ocean provide. The beach is the principal access point for boat trips to Pigeon Island National Park just offshore, and whale watching boats also depart from Nilaveli during the season. The level of beach development is modest — a handful of quality hotels and guesthouses along the beach road — which means the beach retains a natural, uncrowded character that is increasingly rare on Sri Lanka’s popular western coast. The water is exceptionally clear from April to September, the East Coast’s prime season.
