Overview
Beruwala is most famous as the location of Sri Lanka’s first Muslim settlement — Arab traders who arrived here over 1,000 years ago and established the community still present today — but offshore Beruwala, accessible by boat, the coral reef patches that dot the coastal shelf provide snorkelling and diving of reasonable quality within easy reach of the resort hotels. The patch reefs at Beruwala are not as extensive as Hikkaduwa or Bar Reef but they support good populations of reef fish, occasional turtles, and the coral diversity typical of the southwest coast. The combination of the Muslim cultural heritage on shore and the coral reefs offshore makes Beruwala a layered destination.
