Overview
Pelmadulla is a rural township approximately 20 kilometres southeast of Ratnapura where alluvial gem mining occurs across agricultural land in a more dispersed and intimate setting than the main Ratnapura gem fields. The Pelmadulla area is known within the gem trade for producing high-quality corundum — particularly sapphires of a distinctive colour range — and the rural gem fields here reveal the remarkable coexistence of paddy cultivation and gem extraction that defines much of the Sabaragamuwa landscape. Small family operations dig shallow illama pits between the paddy plots, and the interaction between agricultural and mining activities — the same flat floodplain serving both rice cultivation and gemstone extraction — creates a landscape of extraordinary human ingenuity.
