Katugas Ella Waterfall

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Ratnapura

Overview

Katugas Ella is a hidden waterfall in the forested hills above Ratnapura, requiring a moderate hike through rubber plantations and secondary jungle to reach. The falls cascade through a narrow gorge in the forest, creating a more enclosed and dramatically lit composition than the open Bopath Ella — the surrounding jungle frames the cascade in deep green and the sound of the water fills the gorge completely. The approach trail passes through working rubber plantations whose latex collection tools and the smell of fresh rubber create an agricultural sensory experience entirely distinctive to the Sabaragamuwa lowlands. Katugas Ella is considerably less visited than Bopath Ella, making any visit feel like a personal discovery, and the natural pool at the base provides excellent wading in the dry season.
