Rubber Plantations (Kitulgala)

Overview

The rubber plantations of the Kitulgala area are part of the extensive rubber cultivation zone that defines the Sabaragamuwa lowlands — a landscape of tall, straight rubber trees with pale grey-white trunks planted in regular rows on the hillsides surrounding the Kelani valley. Rubber has been cultivated in the Sabaragamuwa Province since the British introduced the Hevea brasiliensis plant in the late 19th century, and the plantation landscape has become as characteristic of the region as the rainforest it partly replaced. The morning routine of rubber tapping — where estate workers move silently through the rows cutting fresh incisions in the bark to collect the white latex into small cups — is one of the most atmospheric agricultural scenes in Sri Lanka, beginning before dawn and completing by 10am when the heat halts the latex flow.
