Overview
Thudugala Ella is a beautiful multi-tiered waterfall located in the forested hinterland of Kalutara District, fed by the tributaries of the upper Kalu Ganga watershed descending from the foothills of the Sabaragamuwa highlands. The waterfall cascades down a series of granite steps and rock faces surrounded by dense tropical forest, creating natural plunge pools at the base where swimming is possible during and after the rainy season. Reaching Thudugala Ella involves a moderately enjoyable forest trail that passes through rubber plantations, small tea gardens, and secondary jungle before arriving at the falls — a journey that is itself a pleasure in good weather. The waterfall is one of the most accessible natural highlights of the Kalutara hinterland and receives far fewer visitors than the waterfalls of Ella or Nuwara Eliya, giving it an intimate, personal quality that the more famous cascades have long since lost.
