Overview
Ruwanwelisaya is one of the most magnificent and spiritually charged Buddhist stupas in the world — a colossal white dagoba rising to approximately 103 metres above the sacred city of Anuradhapura, built by King Dutugamunu in the 2nd century BCE as a monument to the unification of Sri Lanka under Buddhist sovereignty. The stupa stands on a vast platform approached through four ceremonial entrances, each flanked by elephant figures embedded in the base wall — nearly 400 elephant sculptures forming a continuous frieze around the entire base, representing the elephant as the earthly bearer of the sacred. The dome is perfectly hemispherical, gleaming white against the blue sky, and the scale of the structure — built without modern engineering — reflects an ancient civilisation’s total commitment of labour and faith. Ruwanwelisaya is an active place of daily worship and continuous renovation, maintained by the Anuradhapura monastic community as it has been since its founding.
