Brief Garden by Bevis Bawa

Overview

Brief Garden is one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary private gardens, created by the artist, landscape designer, and bon vivant Bevis Bawa over five decades of passionate cultivation. Located near Aluthgama in the Bentota area, the 2.3-hectare garden surrounds a colonial bungalow that served as Bevis’s home and creative sanctuary from 1929 until his death in 1992. The garden is a layered, theatrical composition of tropical plants, sculpture, ponds, hidden pathways, and architectural follies — entirely unlike any other garden in Sri Lanka. It reflects Bevis’s eccentric personality and his extraordinary social world, which included artists, writers, theatre personalities, and international celebrities. Actor Vivien Leigh was photographed here in the 1950s. The garden has been meticulously maintained since Bevis’s death and is now open to the public as a national treasure. Bevis was the older brother of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most celebrated architect, and the two shared an aesthetic sensibility rooted in the tropical modernist movement.
