Overview
The Talawila coastal wetlands — the mangrove and marsh habitats surrounding the Talawila–Kalpitiya coastal zone — form part of the ecologically important coastal belt of the North Western Province that links the Puttalam Lagoon system with the open sea. The wetlands support a variety of waterbirds, mangrove-associated species, and in season, migratory waders that use the intertidal flats as feeding habitat. The wetlands are not formally protected or developed for tourism but their ecological value is significant, and they complement the St. Anne’s Church pilgrimage site with a natural dimension. The mangrove forest sections are particularly atmospheric in the early morning when coastal mist sits above the channels and the birds are most active.
