Overview
Karuwalagaswewa Forest Reserve is a protected forest area in the eastern Puttalam District that forms part of the network of forest habitats connecting Wilpattu National Park with the North Central Province’s wildlife zones. The reserve encompasses dry zone mixed evergreen forest of the type that characterises the northwestern interior — a forest of considerable ecological importance as part of the broader wildlife corridor system of Sri Lanka’s dry zone. Elephants use the forest seasonally, and the bird community within the reserve includes several dry zone endemic species. The reserve is largely unknown to tourism and its protection and conservation significance exceeds its visitor profile enormously.
