Overview
Vella Island, one of the smaller islands in the Kalpitiya area, is surrounded by coral reef sections that are accessible for snorkelling and shallow diving — a less-visited alternative to the Bar Reef proper, providing reef experiences of good quality in calmer, shallower conditions closer to the peninsula. The coral formations around Vella Island include hard coral heads, branching corals, and reef fish communities that give an accessible introduction to the Gulf of Mannar reef ecosystem without the long boat journey to Bar Reef. Sea turtles are regularly present in the coral areas around the island.
