Bentara River Estuary

Overview

The Bentara River estuary near Balapitiya is a quieter, less-developed alternative to the famous Madu River safari system — an estuarine environment of mangroves, tidal channels, and productive bird habitat that is accessible by informal boat arrangement from the local fishing community. The Bentara estuary provides the ecological richness of a river-sea transition zone in a completely uncrowded and authentic setting. Kingfishers, herons, and monitor lizards are reliably present in the mangrove channels, and the surrounding forest and agricultural land creates a diversity of habitats visible in a short boat circuit.
