Wilpattu Southern Access Zones

Overview

Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka — a vast 1,317 square kilometre wilderness of dense jungle, natural lakes (villus), and coastal scrub in the northwest of the country. The southern access zones, approached from the Anuradhapura and Puttalam directions, provide entry into the less-visited sections of the park where the safari experience is genuinely wilder and less crowded than the popular northern entry. Wilpattu is particularly famous for its leopard population — the willus (natural basin lakes) attract a variety of wildlife in the early morning, and patient observation from the safari vehicle at these lake edges yields encounters with leopards, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, sambar, and water buffaloes. The park’s very density and wildness — the jungle is thick and paths narrow — means wildlife encounters require patience and good guiding.
