Eth Vehera Ruins

Overview

Eth Vehera — the Elephant Stupa — is a ruined dagoba in the forest below the main Mihintale steps, named for the elephant figures that once decorated its base platform. The stupa is in a partially excavated state and the surrounding area contains additional monastery ruins — platforms, pillar stubs, and collapsed walls — that document a once-substantial monastic community operating at the base of the sacred mountain. Eth Vehera is considerably less visited than the main Mihintale circuit and receives almost no independent attention, giving it a forest ruin atmosphere of the kind that rewards unhurried exploration. The surrounding forest is also good birdwatching territory, and the combination of ancient ruins and forest ecology creates a pleasant and substantive alternative to the main pilgrimage circuit for those with time to explore.
