Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in the 4th century BCE, Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s political and religious capital for over 1,300 years. The city is home to the Sri Maha Bodhi — a sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, India. At 2,300 years old, it is the oldest historically documented tree in the world.
