Batticaloa is a city in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. It is known for its unique phenomenon of “singing fish” — a musical sound that reportedly emanates from the Batticaloa Lagoon on full moon nights. The cause of this natural phenomenon remains debated. Batticaloa Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1628, was later taken over by the Dutch. Kallady Beach, just south of the city, is a beautiful, uncrowded beach ideal for swimming.
