Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the Matale District of the Central Province. The rock itself rises about 200 metres above the surrounding plain. At the top are the ruins of an ancient palace. The site was built by King Kashyapa I (477–495 CE) as his royal capital. On the way up, you’ll find the famous Lion Rock entrance (only the paws remain), ancient frescoes of celestial maidens, and the Mirror Wall. The surrounding area features beautiful water gardens.
