Alankuda Beach Dunes

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com West Coast Southwest

Overview

The sand dune formations behind Alankuda Beach — where the prevailing Indian Ocean winds push sand inland from the beach edge into low dune ridges that partially encroach on the coastal scrub — create a distinctive beach landscape that adds ecological texture to what is already one of the finest natural beaches on the western coast. The dunes are modest in scale but their presence adds photographic and ecological interest to the beach, and the dune-backed beach composition — the white sand rising to the dune ridge with the casuarina scrub behind — is distinctively different from the flat beach landscapes elsewhere on the western coast.

Highlights

  • Wind-formed sand dunes backing one of Sri Lanka’s finest western coast beaches
  • The dune-backed beach composition is visually distinctive
  • Ecological interest — the dune vegetation is different from the beach proper
  • Part of Alankuda’s natural coastal character
  • The dune ridges create elevated photography positions above the beach
  • Turtle nesting in the dune-backed beach sections
  • The coastal wind environment that creates both the dunes and the kite surfing
