Overview
Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary’s coral systems — spread across approximately 160 square kilometres of protected Indian Ocean north of Kalpitiya — represent the largest and most diverse protected reef system accessible from Sri Lanka’s western coast. The reef encompasses a mosaic of hard coral formations, soft coral gardens, sea grass beds, and deep-water coral walls that collectively support 400+ fish species, sea turtles, rays, sharks, and numerous invertebrates. The coral architecture ranges from shallow table corals accessible to snorkellers at 2–3 metres to deep formation walls at 20+ metres requiring certification. The sanctuary’s distance from the coast (35–60 minutes by boat) has largely protected it from anchor damage and intensive fishing, and the ecosystem health here substantially exceeds that of more accessible reef systems.
