Athugala Buddha Statue

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Kurunegala

Overview

Athugala is another of the animal-shaped rock outcrops surrounding Kurunegala — this one traditionally associated with the tortoise form — and it hosts one of the most visible large Buddha statues in the North Western Province, a white seated figure that gazes across the city and Kurunegala Lake from its elevated position on the rock face. The statue is a prominent landmark in the Kurunegala skyline and the approach provides views over the lake and town that complement the perspectives available from Ethagala. A small temple complex surrounds the statue and is an active place of worship. Athugala, Ethagala, and the other rocky outcrops together create Kurunegala’s extraordinary natural environment — a city ringed by dramatic granite formations each carrying its own spiritual identity.
