Overview
Kaudulla National Park is Minneriya’s sister park — an adjacent protected area around the Kaudulla Tank that extends the elephant habitat and provides an important complementary wildlife sanctuary in the Habarana area. Kaudulla receives fewer visitors than Minneriya and its forest sections are denser and more wild in character, making it a preferred choice for visitors wanting a less crowded safari experience. The Elephant Gathering phenomenon extends to Kaudulla when the water and grass conditions favour it — typically later in the season (November–January) when Minneriya’s tank conditions are less productive. Leopards are present in the dense forest sections, and the birdlife of the tank margins is excellent. The combination of Minneriya (dry season) and Kaudulla (wetter season) provides year-round elephant watching in the Habarana zone.
