Overview
Ridi Viharaya — the Silver Temple — is one of the most distinctive and historically significant Buddhist temples in the North Western Province, located approximately 20 kilometres from Kurunegala in the village of Ridigama. The temple takes its name from a remarkable discovery in the 2nd century BCE when a merchant found silver ore (ridi) at this site while searching for materials to build a stupa for King Dutugamunu — the silver was used to line the inner chamber of the main stupa, giving it both its name and an extraordinary lustrous quality that persists. The temple complex is built dramatically into and against a large granite rock face, with cave shrines, painted corridors, Dutch-gifted blue and white Delft tiles lining some walls (a remarkable colonial-era gift), ancient frescoes, and rows of seated Buddha figures creating an interior of layered historical richness found in very few other temples in Sri Lanka.
