Overview
The offshore belt between Kalpitiya, Mannar, and the broader Gulf of Mannar forms part of the Indian Ocean whale migration routes — the deep-water channels through which blue whales, sperm whales, and Bryde’s whales move seasonally. The Kalpitiya kite season (May–October) coincides with the whale migration period, and the same upwelling conditions that concentrate fish and dolphins also bring whales into the offshore zone. While Kalpitiya whale watching is less organised than Mirissa or Trincomalee, the encounters when they occur have a raw, frontier quality produced by the offshore wilderness character of these waters.
