Overview
Batticaloa Fort is a well-preserved Dutch colonial fortification on the narrow island of land between the lagoon and the sea at the heart of Batticaloa town — a compact star-shaped structure built by the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century to control access to the valuable eastern coastal trade routes. The fort’s distinctive square plan with rounded bastions is largely intact, and the Dutch administrative and residential buildings within the walls retain considerable colonial-era character. The fort now serves as a government administrative centre — the District Secretariat operates from within its walls — which means it is in continuous use and well-maintained. The lagoon views from the fort walls and the surrounding colonial streetscape of Batticaloa town give the site an atmospheric quality of a living heritage precinct.
