Kande Viharaya Temple

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Bentota Area

Overview

Kande Viharaya is one of the most striking Buddhist temples in the Ambalangoda area of the Galle District, instantly recognisable by its enormous white Buddha statue that stands at approximately 30 metres tall, visible from considerable distances along the coastal road. The temple complex sits on a rocky hill above the town of Ambalangoda, offering elevated views over the surrounding landscape and coastline. The temple is an active and well-maintained place of worship, with a large main shrine room containing important Buddhist relics, beautifully decorated interior walls, and a series of smaller shrines arranged around the hilltop. The giant seated Buddha on the hilltop has become a regional landmark and symbol of spiritual protection over the coastal communities below. During Vesak and Poson Poya celebrations, the temple is dramatically illuminated and draws thousands of pilgrims from the surrounding districts. The climb to the hilltop is relatively easy and rewarded by panoramic views.
