Overview
The Panama wetlands area south of Pottuvil encompasses a series of freshwater and brackish pools, seasonal lakes, and swampy areas that collectively form one of the most productive crocodile habitats on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast. The lagoon sections near Panama are home to a substantial population of mugger crocodiles that bask in groups on the sandy banks and move through the shallow water in the warm afternoon hours. The wetland also supports good waterbird populations — herons, egrets, and painted storks — and the combination of large reptile watching, bird photography, and the flat coastal wetland landscape creates a compelling natural experience. The crocodiles at Panama are generally larger and more numerous than those encountered at Pottuvil Lagoon.
