Overview
Viharamahadevi Park is Colombo’s largest and most beloved urban park, covering over 24 hectares in the heart of the city. Originally named Victoria Park during British colonial rule, it was renamed in honour of Queen Viharamahadevi, the heroic mother of King Dutugamunu — one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated ancient kings. The park is a lush, tree-shaded sanctuary offering respite from the heat and noise of central Colombo. A grand golden Buddha statue seated at its centre is one of the park’s defining features. Manicured lawns, tropical flower beds, fountains, children’s play areas, and a small open-air theatre make it a favourite for families, joggers, and morning walkers alike. Fruit bats roost in the towering trees at dusk, and various bird species inhabit the canopy throughout the day. The National Museum of Sri Lanka and the Town Hall are both within walking distance, making this a natural hub for cultural exploration.
