Overview
The deep forest canopy trails of the Kitulgala forest zone represent the most immersive and physically demanding forest experience available in the Sabaragamuwa Province — routes that penetrate the undisturbed interior sections of the Kelani valley rainforest, where the canopy closes completely overhead and the forest floor is a constant twilight of filtered green light. These trails go beyond the standard Makandawa guided walks into the less accessible sections of the forest, where the density and ecological richness of the primary wet zone forest is undiluted by agricultural influence. The canopy trails require fitness, commitment, and excellent guiding — but they deliver an immersion in one of Sri Lanka’s finest forest environments that is available at few other sites outside Sinharaja.
