Overview
The grassland edges of the Horton Plains plateau — accessible from the Belihuloya and Ohiya southern approaches — are among the finest examples of Sri Lanka’s montane patana (highland grassland) ecosystems, where the open grassland meets the cloud forest of the plateau rim in an ecological boundary of exceptional biodiversity. Sambar deer graze the open grass in the early morning, Sri Lanka bush warblers sing from the grass tussocks, and the horizon drops dramatically away from the plateau edge toward the lowlands far below. The grassland edges are particularly spectacular in the early morning when the grassland emerges from the overnight mist in a sequence of silhouettes and golden light, creating photography conditions of extraordinary quality.
