Overview
The Demodara Loop is one of the greatest pieces of railway engineering in Asia — a unique solution to the problem of descending from the Ella plateau to the Demodara valley without the railway gradient exceeding workable limits. The train enters the Demodara Loop tunnel, spirals downward through an underground cork-screw curve, and emerges from the hillside below and behind its entry point — having descended several metres of elevation within the hill while simultaneously crossing beneath the Nine Arches Bridge visible above. The experience of travelling through the loop by train is disorienting and remarkable — the train seems to double back on itself underground — and the engineering achievement of a railway spiral built in 1921 without modern construction technology is genuinely extraordinary. The Demodara station and its surrounding area provide viewpoints for understanding the full geometry of the loop from the outside.
