Haputale Ridge Viewpoints (Ella Edge Zone)

Overview

The Haputale ridge forms the southwestern edge of the Ella–Bandarawela plateau, and the series of viewpoints accessible from the roads and paths along this ridge provide some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the entire Uva Province. From the Haputale side — most famously from Lipton’s Seat above Dambatenne — the land drops thousands of metres to the southern lowlands, and the view on clear days extends to the Indian Ocean horizon. On the Ella edge of this ridge, several less-visited viewpoints provide similar but differently oriented perspectives — looking northeast across the Ella Valley, south toward Haputale and Bandarawela, and in rare conditions east toward the dry zone plains. These edge zone viewpoints are typically reached on day walks from Ella or from the minor roads connecting Ella with Haputale.

Highlights

  • Ridge viewpoints between Ella and Haputale with extraordinary elevated perspectives
  • On clear days, the view extends south to the Indian Ocean coast
  • The geological drama of the highland escarpment is fully apparent from the ridge
  • Less visited than Lipton’s Seat — fewer crowds and more solitude
  • Walking the ridge connects the Ella and Haputale area viewpoints
  • The tea estates on the ridge slopes below create a beautiful foreground
  • Dawn and dusk are the most atmospheric times for the light on the escarpment
  • Part of the network of highland ridge walks in the Uva Province
