Overview

The section of the Colombo–Badulla hill country railway between Ella and Haputale covers approximately 35 kilometres through one of the finest highland rail landscapes in South Asia — a journey through deep gorges, tea estate plateaus, colonial-era stations including Idalgashinna, tunnel cuttings through forest ridges, and the Haputale escarpment approach with its extraordinary views over the southern lowlands. The hour-long journey encompasses most of the visual highlights that have made the full Colombo–Badulla route one of the most celebrated rail experiences in Asia, in a compact section accessible as a half-day excursion from either town. Travelling with the train door open in third class, the highland air and the landscape passing at a gentle pace creates a profoundly sensory travel experience.
