Overview
Namunukula Mountain (2,036m) is the highest peak in the Badulla District, rising dramatically above the Ella area to the east and forming the most prominent massif visible on the eastern horizon from Ella town. The mountain — whose name means “nine peaks” — is a significant geological and ecological feature of the Uva Province highlands, and its upper slopes support some of the finest remaining cloud forest in the eastern highlands. Views of Namunukula from the Ella area are consistently dramatic, and the mountain forms the eastern backdrop to the Ella landscape in virtually every direction. The summit itself is accessible by a demanding full-day hike, and the views from the upper grasslands and rocky ridges are extraordinary — the Ella valley below, the eastern dry zone stretching to the horizon, and the surrounding highland peaks.
