Overview
Pedro Tea Estate is one of the oldest and most visited working tea estates in Nuwara Eliya, producing the high-altitude Ceylon orange pekoe that the district is internationally famous for. Located about 4 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya town on the Pedro Road, the estate sits at over 1,800 metres elevation and commands magnificent views over the surrounding Highland landscape. The factory, which processes leaf from the surrounding gardens on a daily basis, offers guided tours that take visitors through every stage of the orthodox tea manufacturing process — withering, rolling, fermentation, firing, and grading — ending in a cupping and tasting session in the estate’s own tea room. The tea produced at Pedro consistently scores highly in both domestic and international auctions, and buying directly from the estate ensures authenticity and freshness. The landscape of the estate — terrace after terrace of pruned tea bushes ascending the hillsides, with groups of Tamil pluckers moving through the rows — is both beautiful and historically significant.
