Haputale Gap Viewpoint

Overview

The Haputale Gap is one of the most dramatic natural viewpoints in the Uva Province — a cleft in the highland escarpment where the land drops abruptly from the tea estate ridges above Haputale to the vast southern lowlands below. From the viewpoints accessible from the Haputale ridge road, the full scale of this geographical drama becomes visible: the highland tea estates in the immediate foreground, the escarpment edge just metres below, and then a sheer drop of hundreds of metres to the flat lowland landscape that stretches south all the way to the coastal plains. On clear days the view extends beyond 100 kilometres to the Indian Ocean horizon. The Haputale Gap viewpoints are accessible within a short walk of the town and the train station, making them one of the most easily reached highland panoramas in Sri Lanka.
