Kalpitiya Peninsula Extension Zones

Overview

The extension zones of the Kalpitiya Peninsula — the northern-most reaches of the peninsula beyond the main Alankuda and Dutch Bay resort cluster, where the land narrows to almost nothing between the Puttalam Lagoon and the open Indian Ocean — provide some of the most dramatic coastal geography on the western coast. These northern extension zones are where the peninsula approaches its maximum narrowness, the ocean visible on both sides simultaneously, and where the kite surfing conditions are at their most consistent and powerful. The landscape here has a quality of primal coastal geometry — the flat sand strip, the wind, the lagoon behind, and the open ocean ahead — that is unlike anything else on the Sri Lanka coast.
