Overview
Okanda Devalaya is an ancient Hindu shrine at the coastal edge of Kumana National Park, dedicated to the god Kataragama (Skanda), that serves as the dramatic starting point for the annual Pada Yatra — the barefoot pilgrimage walk from Okanda to Kataragama, covering approximately 220 kilometres of coastal and jungle terrain over 15 days. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims gather at Okanda each June–August for the pilgrimage departure, creating an atmosphere of devotional intensity in this remote coastal location. The shrine is set where the Indian Ocean, the jungle, and the sacred meet at the southeastern extremity of Sri Lanka’s inhabited coast — a location that amplifies the spiritual energy considerably.
