Overview
Rathgama Lagoon near Galle is a productive coastal lagoon system between the main Hikkaduwa resort belt and Galle town — a Ramsar-designated wetland of considerable ecological importance that is surprisingly little visited given its outstanding birdwatching and boat safari qualities. The lagoon encompasses mangrove channels, open water sections, and tidal flats that attract excellent waterbird populations including painted storks, purple herons, and migratory waders. Boat safaris through the Rathgama mangrove channels provide one of the finest wetland nature experiences accessible from the southwest coast, and the proximity to Galle Fort makes it an excellent natural complement to the UNESCO heritage city visit.
