Overview
Kudawa and its surrounding lagoon systems form part of the broader Kalpitiya coastal lagoon ecology — a network of shallow tidal inlets and brackish water bodies between the peninsula and the mainland that provide productive habitat for waterbirds and traditional fishing. The Kudawa area is less visited than the main Puttalam Lagoon but equally rich in bird life, with painted storks, herons, and specialist coastal birds using the quieter sections of the lagoon. The fishing communities along the Kudawa lagoon edges maintain traditional methods and the early morning activity on the water creates photographic scenes of genuine coastal community authenticity.
