Overview

Fa Hien Cave is one of the most archaeologically significant prehistoric sites in Sri Lanka and indeed in South Asia, located in the Kalutara District hinterland near the village of Bulatsinhala. The cave — named after the ancient Chinese Buddhist monk Fa Hien who visited Sri Lanka in the 5th century CE — contains evidence of human habitation stretching back approximately 37,000 years, making it one of the oldest known prehistoric dwelling sites in South Asia. Archaeological excavations at Fa Hien have yielded an extraordinary trove of material — bone tools, geometric microliths, the remains of hearths, red ochre pigments, and most remarkably, the skeletal remains of early humans including an infant burial that represents one of the earliest formal burials identified in South Asia. The cave itself is a large limestone cavern with impressive formations, and it continues to be a site of active scientific interest. Despite its profound historical significance, Fa Hien receives very few visitors.
