Overview
Kudumbigala is a remote and extraordinarily atmospheric ancient Buddhist monastery complex in the southeastern Ampara District — a series of cave hermitages, stupa ruins, and rock shrines built into and among the massive granite boulders of a forest outcrop rising from the flat coastal dry zone. Dating to approximately the 3rd century BCE, the monastery is one of the oldest continuously used Buddhist hermitage complexes in Sri Lanka, and the monks who lived in these cave cells for 2,000+ years left behind carved drip ledges, Brahmi inscriptions, and the spiritual imprint of generations of forest monasticism. The rock and jungle setting — the monasteries accessed by forest paths climbing through the granite formations — is one of the most dramatically evocative ancient sacred landscapes on the island.
